Cal Ripken 9 year olds win District 2 for the 2nd straight year

The Methuen Cal Ripken 9 year-old District team won the District 2 American League championship for the second year in a row. With Methuen going undefeated in District play, Coach TJ Abernathy likes the Methuen team's chances. Two of the players were 8 year olds playing on the 9 year old squad last year. The experience helped them in District play and they are looking forward to the great experience that Cal Ripken provides at the State level.

Methuen moved to Cal Ripken three years ago to remove the boundaries and restrictions imposed by Little League. Cal Ripken League is the youth division of Babe Ruth Baseball. After a good learning experiencein its first year as part of the new league, Methuen has placed teams into State Level play for its second straight year.

How are our teams

 doing this summer?

Districts:  Well - its over.  The 9's finished in the top 4 in the State tournament and the 14's were eliminated in the States.  But, both teams represented the league and our city with pride and class!

Legion:  http://www.eteamz.com/D8ALB/standings/index.cfm?season=602092&division=5405991&subsite=5351549
Junior Legion qualified for the playoffs finishing either in first or second place (one game had to be made up by another team to determine final standings).  This is the first ever Junior Legion playoffs.  Good luck to the team.

PONY:  http://www.leaguelineup.com/welcome.asp?cmenuid=1&url=suburbanponyleague&sid=371875983
After a promising start - the 14/15 team finished out of the mix.
However, our 13 year old team made it into the final 8 and they begin playoffs on 7/27.

BDSL:  http://www.sportsmanager.us/AndoverLittleLeague.htm
                Methuen 13 Blue finished undefeated!
Methuen 13 Red had some close games.
Methuen 14/15 are in fifth place.
                Playoffs for BDSL start 8/1.

Senior Babe Ruth:  http://lowellseniorbaberuth.org/
The team is currently in 3rd place.  They had a 8-0 run there until stumbling a bit.  Playoffs begin this weekend.  (7/30)

Junior League (13 year old) Bat Rules

We are changing the bat rules for the 2010 season at the Junior League level.  For the 2010 season you may:
  1. Use a bat stamped with a BPF of 1.15 or less
  2. If there is no BPF it must be stamped with 'approved for Little League' or 'Cal Ripken' and be a drop 10 or less (-9 is ok, -11 is not)

History:  When we were chartered with Little League they forced us to go to a drop 5 or lower at 13 years-old.  However, at 14, a drop 3 is required.  So parents would spend a lot of money for a bat for one year's use OR kids would have to swing a very heavy drop 3 bat!

Babe Ruth does not require us to go this route.  So, we are going to allow 13's to use their Little League / Cal Ripken bats per above.

If you have any questions please email: methuenbaseball@verizon.net

 Bat Regulations
Cal Ripken - Bats should be stamped with either an Approved for Cal Ripken OR Approved for Little League label Bats must be printed with a BPF of 1.15 or less.  Bats without a BPF lableing cannot be greater than a drop factor of -10.
